General

To get the fullest use from this site, you really need a browser that has support for Frames, JavaScript, Java applets and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Effectively this means a minimum of Microsoft IE 5.0 or Netscape 6.0 with Java and JavaScript enabled. The vast majority of people visiting this site will have at least those versions with those tools enabled. If you don't, you will still be able to browse the site, but with poorer formatting and slightly limited functionality.

Specific Requirements

What this site should look like

JavaScript

Page headings and footers are standardised using a JavaScript library. This saves me a lot of time and ensures that my pages are consistent and easily updated.

Frames

Frames are only used to allow me to have a single menu displayed with all pages. The alternative, of reproducing the menu on every page, involves a lot of maintenance. This just discourages me from adding new pages. The site is navigable without frames, by using the site map and links at the bottom of each page.

Style Sheets

The World Wide Web Consortium recommends the use of style sheets for web page formatting in their HTML 4.0 specification.

Style sheets means this site has no useless images. This means it is quicker to load than it would be if it used images for title bars, headings, etc. If the quote from the HTML 4.0 specification below appears in a grey box, your browser is interpreting style sheets to some extent.

A.1.2 Changes to attributes
Almost all attributes that specify the presentation of an HTML document (e.g., colors, alignment, fonts, graphics, etc.) have been deprecated in favor of style sheets.

Unfortunately Netscape 4.x has very poor support for CSS. If using this browser, I recommend going to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced and turning off stylesheets. Or, better still, upgrade!

Java

Screen Size

Some of the tables in the data pages are very wide and it's very much a case of the larger the screen the better!
